A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
