The star has handed over the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots music venues.

Fender was given the prize on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

He has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part local spots had in his early career.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," stated the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

He also took part, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to support 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted locations that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and sound issues.

Other venues obtained funding support in upgrading amenities and gear that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The concept that revenue from shows in big venues supports the independent spots, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

He is not the first artist to give his award funds to worthy causes.

Back when they received the award in 1996 for their release the album, frontman Jarvis Cocker declared that the act would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her bounty among several organizations, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite told the media.

In recent years, the band gave their funds to the community center that developed their group, as well as other local music groups.

Also the 1994 recipients the group donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked artist the singer. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our success impacted somebody else's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had rescued several small stages in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The first in Southampton and the second in Bristol were acquired under the community ownership program, which is funded by a national body and music fans who buy "shares" in the properties.
